What is PIP?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit that helps disabled people between the age of 16-64. It helps with the extra costs of a long-term health condition or disability. PIP is a non-means tested benefit which means, it will not be affected by any other income you are receiving such as, earning or savings.

Are you still receiving DLA?

The Government have decided to replace DLA with PIP. The process began back in April 2013 for Great Britain and on the 20th June 2016 in Northern Ireland.

The Department for Communities in Northern Ireland (DFC) have been writing to all recipients of the DLA, to let them know of the change and that they will need to apply for PIP in order to continue receiving their benefits. Payments had continued being paid until there was a decision put in place for the claim.

It is important to know that the DFC will need to have your correct contact details and you must reply to them within the given amount of time.

Can you apply for PIP?

You need to be aged between 16 and State Pension age to apply.

You need to have daily living or mobility needs and need extra help because of an illness, disability or mental health condition, to apply.

If you think you are eligible to get PIP then contact the Department for Communities directly on 0800 587 0932 and they will help you with your enquiries.

How much can you receive?

PIP is made up of two parts called ‘parts’ – the ‘daily living part’ and the ‘mobility part’. Each part is paid at different rates.

Parts Weekly rate
Mobility part - higher rate £71.00
Mobility part - lower rate £26.90
Daily living part - higher rate £101.75
Daily living part - lower rate £68.10

You must be in receipt of the Mobility part - higher rate in order to qualify for the Motability Scheme with PIP.
