What is it?
Personal Independence Payment is a benefit that helps disabled people between the age of 16-64. It helps with the extra costs of a long-term health condition or disability. PIP is a non-means tested benefit which means, it will not be affected by any other income you are receiving such as, earning or savings.
The Government have decided to replace DLA with PIP. The process began back in April 2013 for Great Britain and on the 20th June 2016 in Northern Ireland. The Department for Communities in Northern Ireland (DWP) have been writing to all recipients who are apart of the DLA, to let them know of the change and that they will need to apply for PIP in order to continue receiving their benefits. Payments had continued being paid until there was a decision put in place for the claim.
It is important to know that the DWP will need to have your correct contact details and you must reply to them within the given amount of time.
If you think you are eligible to get PIP and are in need of extra help because of a daily living and/or mobility needs and have an illness, disability or a mental health condition then contact the DWP directly on 0800 121 4433 for the UK and 0800 587 0932 for NI and they will help you with your enquiries.
PIP is created by two components called daily living and mobility and both can be paid at either the standard or enhanced rate. Here is an example of the PIP rates in April 2018:
Components | Weekly rate |
Daily living - Standard rate | £57.30 |
Daily living - Enhanced rate | £85.60 |
Mobility - Standard rate | £22.65 |
Mobility - Enhanced rate | £59.75 |
